THURSDAY 16 Edinburgh I John Fahey 8: Derek Bailey Queen’s Hall, Clerk Street, 668 2019. 8pm. An unusual pairing of two incredibly talented guitarists - Fahey’s unique blues interpretation has been dubbed ’American Primitive’ in an attempt at classification, and Bailey released a 1996 album entitled Guitar; Drum ’n’Bass, which anticipated recent developments in club land. I Yo Yo Kilili Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 221 1288. 10pm—3am. £4 (£3). A steaming tajine of fusion, from jazz- improv to breakbeat, picking up a healthy dose of North African rhythms along the way. The band also feature exotic strings and percussion. Lizzard Lounge’s Unkle Fawaz supplies the vinyl.

Drummer Foster was an incredibly close musical associate of Miles Davis and has worked with all the greats. He is joined tonight by his all-star New York band featuring John Nugent on sax, Kevin Hays on keys and Doug Weiss on bass.

I The Pasadena Root Orchestra Queen’s Hall, Clerk Street, 668 2019. 8pm. £12. With almost 30 years of touring experience behind them, this ensemble have become adept at recreating the heady atmosphere of the 1920s and 305 showtune. Their repertory ranges from Porter and Berlin to Ellington, Calloway and Fletcher Henderson, with some humour and pizzaz thrown in.
