At Club Mercado they like to do things a bit differently. ’There‘s a lot more to clubbing than house and garage,‘ explains manager Stuart Cheynes (of hairdressing fame). Hence they are ‘getting away from the druggie element‘ and providing the people of Edinburgh with an alcohol-based club experience with some excellent live cabaret thrown in.
As the legendary Trendy Wendy limbers up for the Christmas party season, Club Mercado are expecting a full house on all their extra festive TFIF evenings (16, 17, 21, 22, 23 Dec, pre-booking necessary) for that essential after-work knees-up. Specially designed Christmas decorations are going up in the next couple of weeks to herald the start of the party season for the ‘glamorous, up-for-it extroverts‘ (you know who you are) who make up Mercado‘s clientele. Sundays will be taken care of with a special Tackno, Jamboree (newly launched R&B and soul club) and Icons (gay/mixed crowd with outrageous cabaret nights), while the emphasis on Saturdays is very much dress up or don‘t get in, with a ‘no effort. no chance‘ policy at both Eye Candy and Viva.
Mercado's, Stuart explains, is a niche club. ‘It’s run by models and is very fashion-led; this is trendy cheese, not mainstream.‘ Viva, (Saturdays, monthly) is exemplary of this, the unique mix of dance and house anthems with live saxophone and 'takes you on a journey through musical taste,‘ presumably leaving you at your destination in the small hours of Sunday morning feeling exhausted, exhilarated and a little hungover.
Watch out for celebrity appearances over the party season; Steps and Darren Day have both been down recently and the cabaret acts are made up of the cream of live British entertainment. There are also some one-off parties to watch out for over the next couple of months; Firecracker (Sat 6 Nov) for Guy Fawkes celebrations, Oscar Night (Sat 20 Nov), Boys R Us (Sat 4 Dec) when Mercado‘s celebrates The Boy Band, and The Snowball (Sat 18 Dec) for a Christmas warm-up.
It looks like Mercado devotees are going to need a whole new wardrobe this season. Don't forget your handbag, darling. (Violet)
