The Stand

Edinburgh: The Stand, Thu 11 Nov ****

Dish of the day: Allan Miller

The Stand conducts itself much like a very well run dinner party. The setting is homely and intimate. The host strolls about, welcoming guests, making sure they get themselves comfortable for a drink. People chat on sofas. The hour is perfect - not a mad rush from work, not too late either. So far so good; but although presentation is important, the real taste test is yet to come.

Thursday’s menu was presented by the hostess for the evening: a very motherly Joon Broon who improvised all night, using the audience as her foil. But perhaps if she hadn’t been trying so hard, we would have seen more of her natural wit. Canapes came in the form of poems - bite-size of course - from Eric Davidson. He's relatively new at this game, but his mignons morceaux were certainly moreish, and it was a great pity when they were all gone.

The next course was proved a favourite. Fin MacArthur’s bland style is deceptive. His material is brilliant - mostly deadpan, unpredictable, fall-about-laughing one- liners. The Stand has a knack of picking the newcomers, but this guy is definitely

one of their specials.

Allan Miller was the main dish of the evening and was a bit of a let-down. His stage presence is sizzling and promises greatness, but his content was thin and what was there was tasteless. Which leaves the sweet. A very sweet newcomer in the open slot made us laugh and won us over with his natural performance. Colin

Simpson is one to watch.

Altogether a very satisfying evening that’s sure to encourage the audience back

for seconds. (Morag Fleming)

the good company of comp Billy Bonkers.
