Sometimes supermarkets' own-label wines can look a bit dull. Sometimes with generic labels, they may not look exciting but we trust they offer good value for money. Well do they?

Bulgarian Cabernet Sauvignon (£2.99) Every student will remember their early days of wine drinking cheap Bulgarian plonk. But although the quality of Bulgarian wines suffered in
the early 905, they are now completely back on form. This is no exception, and for a sub-red it’s amazingly full- bodied, with pleasant dry berry fruit character and subtle tannin. The best £2.99 red I've tried in ages.
Chilean Merlot (£4.49) Merlot can be a difficult grape to make decent wine from, and the French have it down to
an art. Chile, however has almost ideal
conditions to grow the grape. This

smells faintly of green peppers, is velvet soft on the palate and could quite easily be drunk by itself, or with pretty much any food you could throw at it.

Australian Shiraz (£4.99) From the nose alone you know that this is a serious wine — rich and full of spicy fruit. The palate is surprisingly mellom' for such a rich wine, with very little tannin, and overtones of toffee and caramel. This is a 'quiet weekend in’ wine; warming, but not so heavy to llze off-putting. Classic affordable Ozzy Shiraz.
