Kicking off the CCA’s Soundcheck series is this contemporary trio, who create subtle moods in a minimalist style. Their shared CV includes work with jazz greats like Bill Evans, Omette Coleman and Lee Konitz.

I Freddie Kin Quintet with Woods. Rockwell 8r Ke lock St Bride’s Centre, 10 Orwell Terrace, 346 1405. 7.30pm. £7 (£5). US saxophonist and composer Bob Rockwell, who has worked with the likes of Thad Jones and Tito Puente, teams up with local pianist Brian Kellock and Scots sax-man Jimmy Woods for this event, which is hosted, as always, by vocalist Freddie King and his band.

I Altered Beats 2000 Jazz Joint, 8 Morrison Street, 538 7385. 10pm-3am. £6. The millennium edition features a double header from Martin Kershaw’s future funksters Green Juice as well as Paul Harrison’s jazz-dmm & bass fusionists Rare Faction. Decks effects come from DJ Hitchin.

Glasgow

I Chick Lyall, Paul Harrison Trio 8: Dave Conway Ensemble CCA at McLellan Galleries, 270 Sauchiehall Street, 332 0522. 3pm. £5. A gathering of the great and the good on the Scottish scene as part of the CCA’s Soundcheck series. Chick Lyall gives a solo performance on piano, while hot young keyboardist Paul Harrison and his trio perform new work. Bassist Conway takes his octet, featuring John Burgess on tenor sax, Dick Lee on clarinet and Lucy Kendra on vocals, through a new composition.

I Nguyen Le Trio & Tom Bancroft CCA at McLellan Galleries, 270 Sauchiehall Street, 332 0522. 8pm. £10. Le, who brings the influence of his Vietnamese _ heritage to his jazz improvisation, is jomed on bass and drums for this performance. The concert opens with an unusual duet between Le and Tom Bancroft, who brings a Celtic twist on bodhran.
