Tales Of Beatrix Potter (U) (Reginald Mills, UK, 1971) 90 mins. Various stories from the children‘s writer are told in musical form and danced by members of the Royal Ballet. Although Peter Rabbit and all his chums appear on screen, ballet is not perhaps the most engaging way to hold a young audience's attention. Nevertheless, twenty years after its original release, it has become part of the holiday season and here benefits from being seen on the big screen. Edinburgh: Lumiere.

Tarzan (U) **** (Kevin Lima and Chris Buck, US, 1999) Minnie Driver, Glenn Close, Nigel Hawthorne. 88 mins. Disney has finally turned its attention to the second most filmed character in Western cinema (Dracula is the first) and has created sortie astonishing images. Storytelling-wise, 'Iirrzun remains reasonably faithfully to Edgar Rice Burrough's original. Shipwrecked on a tropical island, baby 'I‘arzan looses his human parents to a terrifying tiger and is adopted by an ape clan. All grown up, the Ape Man is reunited with man and womankind when a trophy hunting’anthrogmlogical expedition arrives and 'l‘arzan meets Jane. Ayr: ()deon. Galashiels: Pavilion. Russell, US, 2000) George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube. 114 mins. At the butt end of the Gulf War, four US soldiers who have seen no action whatsoever and don't even understand what the war is about, follow a treasure map to where Saddam Hussein has hidden stolen Kuwati gold. A masterpiece of inhumanity, Russell's witty script and super sharp direction captures the futility of the situation. This film begs some of the most pertinent political questions ever asked in an American movie it‘s amazing it got passed congress. General release. Thunderbird Six (U) **** (David Lane, UK, 1908) 90 mins. Scott, Virgil, Lady Penelope et a1. Calling International Rescue! Black Phantom back shock horror! ()nly Gerry and Sylvia Anderson can save us now! Just as well they can spin a decent yarn. Shame they treat the actors like puppets though . . . Glasgow: Grosvenor. The Tigger Movie (U) *ttt (Jun I-‘alkenstein, US, 2000) 77 mins. Identical in many ways to 1977's The Many Adventures Of ll't’nnie The Pooh, this new yarn based on A.A. Milne's characters finds Pooh, Piglet, Tigger et a1 still living a charmed life of tea parties and afternoon naps. Only this time, the wee stripy fella's decided being one of a kind isn't quite as cool as he'd first thought and so a literal quest for the Tigger Family Tree ensues. A happy ending eventually makes its presence felt, because even 'l'igger is smart enough to recognise that with friends like Pooh, Piglet, Roo and IEeyore. who needs family'.’ See review. General release.

Topsy-Turvy (12) **** (Mike Leigh. UK, 2000) Jim Broadbent, Allan Corduner, Martin Savage. 159 mins. At the film's core is the turbulent creative partnership between Victorian opera writer Gilbert (Broadbent) and playboy genius composer Sullivan (Corduner). But preparations for their greatest show, The Mikado. involve a whole cast who give flawless performances. This might be Leigh's first period drama. but it's another excellent ensemble piece engaging with his usual preoccupation: people at work. rest and play. lidinburgh: Dominion. Filmhouse.

Toy Story 2 (U) ****~k (John l.asseter, US, 2000) Tom Hanks, Tim Allen. Joan Cusack. 95 mins. The new film expands on the original settings and themes: When Woody is not taken to Cowboy Camp by his owner Andy, he begins to question the meaning of his 'life‘. When he's subsequently stolen by a collector who plans to sell him to a Japanese loy museum - Buzz and the gang travel across town to rescue their pal. 'l‘he emotive range of the animated characters is extraordinary; they say that computer generated images will never replace the real thing, but Toy Story 2 makes you wonder. General release.

The Truman Show (PG) **** (Peter Weir, US. 1998') Jim ('aiiey. lama limicy. lid Harris. 10.) mins 'l'iunian lithium); 1.1-!»

a life of sublime banality in the picture perfect island community of Seahaven, but is the unwitting star of the world‘s longest- running documentary soap opera. The Truman Show (the movie) is flawlessly put together, with script and direction perfectly judged. Carrey, still a schmuck. but less ingratiating than usual, surprisingly gives the movie its heart. Edinburgh: Cameo. Tumbleweeds (12) *tii (Gavin O'Connor, US, 2000) Janet Mc'l'eer, Kimberly J. Brown, Jay 0. Sanders. 102 mins. Mary lo (the mesmerising Mc'l'eer) first got married when she was seventeen and she's been running from one no good husband to another ever since. but her teenage daughter, Ava (Brown), has had enough of their nomadic existence. Question is: will mom ever change? The story 's not particularly new, but where this kind of material has elsewhere been drowned in sentiment and cliche, ’Iiunbleweeds feel fresh, real, vital. Glasgow: GFI'. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

12 Monkeys (15) **** (Terry Gilliam, US, 1995) Bruce Willis, Brad Pitt, Madeleine Stowe. 129 mins. A convict from the future is sent to the past to discover the source of a lethal virus that has devastated humanity, but even he begins to wonder if the images in his head are merely delusions. A complex time-travel fantasy, with liberal subplots and a decent mystery edge. that's lifted by Gilliam's ever-brilliant visual skills. It may at times stumble over its own inner logic, but it's an odd. eccentric creation that engages the imagination. Edinburgh: Cameo.

Up At The Villa (12) ** (Philip Haas.

UK US, 2000) Kristin Seott Thomas. James Fox, Sean Penn. 110 mins. Despite Haas pumping new blood into the period drama with the weird Angels .‘l/lfl Insects. his adaptation of Somerset Maugham's novella turns out to be a rather static and dull affair. ()n the plus side 'l‘homas looks gorgeous as Mary Panton. a penniless Iinglish widow living off the generosity of others in a pre- World War II Florentine villa, torn between her starchy fiance (Fox) and a rakiin American playboy (a miscast Penn). See review. Glasgow: Showcase. lidinburgh: UGC Cinemas. Paisley: Showcase. Wonderland (l5) **~k*~k (Michael Winterbottom. UK. 1999) Gina McKee. Shirley Henderson. Molly Parker. 108 mins. At once both extraordinarily beautiful and desperately sad. this portrait of life in contemporary london is seen through the eyes of three sisters and their dysfunctional family. “butler/uni! is unrelentineg grim for the most part. yet the performances are so good that you can't help but be moved to tears. And Winterbottom utilises every trick in the Great l-‘ilmmaker's Manual to create a visual treat worthy of its title. Stirling?
