Crimes Of The Heart Tue 9—Fri 12 May.

7.30pm. £5 (£3). Beth Hanley’s tale of love and loss in 19705 Mississippi won her a shelf-full of theatrical awards, and an Oscar nomination for the screen version in 1986. Centring on three sisters reunited after one of them kills her husband, Crimes Of The Heart is brought to the stage on this occasion by Queen Margaret University College Drama Department.

Long before Hilary Briss was adding extra special ingredients to the sausages in Royston Vasey, this 19th century barber was branching out into the field of piemaking as a means of diSposing of his victims. Mixing Stephen Sondheim’s beautiful score with a somewhat ghoulish subject matter, Edinburgh Music Theatre present this musical favourite. The Heiress ’nie 26m 6 Ma . 7.30pm (Wed & Sat mat 2.30pm). £1 .50—£19 (£7.50—£16). Young, rich and looking for love in 18505 New York, the heiress in question is Catherine Sloper, a woman hotly pursued by the devilishly charming Morris Townsend. But is it her love or her lucre he’s after? Maggie Steed, Alan Howard and award-winning young actress Eve Best star in this Royal National Theatre production, based on the Henry James novel Washington S uare. See preview.

e Fastest eatrical Production In The World Sat 6 May. 8pm. £6. Edinburgh-based theatre company Velvet Jacket set out to impress Norris McWhirter by staging an entire production in just 24 hours. Having been informed which show they are to perform on Friday night, the project organisers

have until 8pm on Saturday to rehearse the ZOO-strong cast in what is rumoured to be a 1950s style American musical. Shaolin Monks Tue 9 May. 8pm. £14—£18. Well here’s something you don’t see everyday. A stage full of monks using storytelling, music, innovative lighting and some well placed leaps to tell the exciting story of the Shaolin Monks’ struggle to protect their temple. See preview.

Gerda Stevenson's Phaedre on Isla Shaw's island design. Edinburgh, Royal Lyceum

and replaced it with a sweeping new stage, designed by award-winning young designer Isla Shaw. Edwin Morgan’s done a similar job with the text, translating Jean Racine ’5 Greek tragedy into pure Scots, and leaving a few people looking for the subtitles. The power of the performances should see you through though. See review.
