‘Borough Baws’, Kernel Snatch and Uncle Harold take the surprisingly cool crowd (let’s face it, midweekers rarely attract thehip and stylish) through a messy'mix' of everything from the Pet Shop Boys to tune-less singalongs amid an almost horrific mash up of bad decor. I Barry Ca anas at EZK. 11pm—3am. £3 (£2); £4 in fancy dress to the theme. 28 Apr. Monthly. Apparently the Barry’s lot are feeling quite religious it being Easter and all that so they’ve dedicated an entire evening of debauchery to the letter B. Aside from the obvious evangelical epiphany readers, expect to see eccie heads, caster bunnies, elongated eels . . . you get the picture.

I Big Beat at The Bongo Club. 10.30pm—3am. £7 (£6). 12 May. Monthly. With a consistent track record of exemplorary nights, a few Big Beats still manage to stand out from the rest as ‘do you remember?’ dates. And tonight is sure to be one. Hailing from New York, Lee Fields and The Soul Providers have them all very, very excited. Adored on the funk circuit, Lee is one of the originals from the days of James Brown, has the most amazing gravely voice and more personality than someone with loads of personality. Throw every cliche in the book at it: ‘do not miss’, ‘essential’, ‘mark in your diary’.

I Club Latino at The Bongo Club. Monthl . Next date 12 May.

I Disu 0 at E2K. 10.30pm-3am. £5. 5 May. Monthly. Settling in quite nicely, thank you, this twisted disco and funky house night. I The 60-60 at Walkers (upstairs). llpm—3am. £5 (£4). 28 Apr. Monthly. Swinging 60$ sounds, boss rock ‘n’ roll, 60$ beat, garage, R&B, soul, sleazy listening and groovy soundtracks.

I Higher Ground at La Belle Angele. Monthly. Next date 12 May with Gemini.

Essential. In Edinburgh.

Fortnight.

Pure What can you say about Claude Young and indeed Pure that hasn't already been said? Arrange these words into a popular phrase: 'Detroit’, 'master’, ‘techno'. The Venue, Fri 28 Apr

Sublime Rulers of the new breed, or so Global Underground Records claim, Craig and Lee move in on the 'Row for this essential night of wicked sweepy trance and breaks from the Tyrant Sound System. And we are greatly pleased. The Porterrow, Fri 28 Apr.

Ultragroove On the Hit list not only because their club deserves a massive shout out, or that they have San Francisco’s brilliant deep house DJ cum producer Miguel Migs guesting, but Gareth and Colin actually give a shit about the music that they play at their club (or at least make us think that they do). See preview. La Belle Ange/e, Fri 28 Apr.

The Linard Lounge Pop quiz: what's Nonivegian, has something to do with the very cool Ultimate Dilemma imprint and has played for Wigan FC? The Bobby Hughes Experience, obviously. Check out the vast talents of one Espen Home (with band in tow) when he gets hip hop and jazzy on yo‘ ass. La Belle Ange/e, Sat 6 May.

Tribal Funktion It's with heavy hearts and tear-stained cheeks that we pen this final, never-to-be-written again Hit list for the utterly superb Tribal Funktion. Rocking our world for eight years now (great going, considering they’re all only 21), it seems that this party, at least, is finally over. So let the chunky-assed, twisted disco and wicked Chicago house reign supreme for one last bash. And then goodbye. The Venue, Sat 6 May.

Queer Sunday C’mon boys, sing along! ’lt’s raining men, hallelujah, it’s raining men . . .' and it certainly will be when the final lot of Mr Gay UK wannabes fight it out for the last chance to make the grand final tonight. Expect some hunky pecs, bright white smiles and nice moves. See Frontlines. E2K, Sun 30 Apr. Tackno It’s a futuristica kind of space age thing, with lots of tin foil, laser- spex, ray guns and bad Trekkie outfits at Tackno of the Future tonight. Hello earthlings, we come in peace . . . Club Mercado, Sun 30 Apr.

27 Apr—ll May 2000 THE UST 73
