BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

Rebel Waltz Edinburgh: City Cafe, Fri 2 Jun

There's been a little haven of underground house in the basement of The City Cafe for a wee while now, two years to be precise, and founder Murray Richardson believes he’s got something to celebrate.

It's been a busy year for him, with two releases on the 20:20 Visions label - his latest 'Armed And Dangerous' hit the shelves on Mon 22 May - and a US tour. His association with the 20:20 imprint has also led to

quite a line-up for the birthday do, with

label boss Ralph Lawson and fellow

signee Domenic Cappello (Sub Culture and Nature) taking their turns on decks. It's a relationship he's very proud of: '20120 is a brilliant label, one of my favourites. It's just good quality at the end of the day and I consider myself lucky to

be part of it.’

Such activity surely warrants an upgrade from Rebel Waltz's pre-club slot though? While Richardson is keen to do a full- scale night. he believes the current format has its advantages: ’T he good thing down at Rebel Waltz to be honest is its size. It's more the atmosphere down there and the people who come down. It's like a wee kind of family thing.’ He also honed his DJing skills in bars, and it‘s had a lasting impact on his musical tastes. 'It would be crazy to play harder tunes for four hours constantly, especially in a bar environment. so l‘d start off playing quite laid-back, deeper sounds and then build it. 1 think that’s how I got into digging a lot of the stuff that I play now. That shaped my style if you like.’

And those of you who are up for a double helping will be glad to know that the party continues at Nature, until 3am.
