John Quigley expanding next year
A ROLLING CHEF gathers no grease? John Quigley is preparing to move on from Glasgow's Art House after the new year, opening his own restaurant - Quigley's — in defunct show rooms of Christie's at 164 Bath Street. Aiming for a Valentine's Day launch, Quigley foresees a 'classic contemporary' menu at prices that should keep a three-course evening meal at about £25. Fresh produce will be ’top of the list' of his priorities. Quigley, who is regularly seen on daytime STV, has cooked in the past for Sinatra and rock icons such as Guns N' Roses. His local credentials include stints at the Spy Bar and Mojo, where he first made his name. Interestingly, the new venture places him back in partnership with Mojo. Quigley says the plan is to convert the current
bar/bistro into a nightclub, while opening a double basement below Quigley’s as a Mojo bar/diner, serving ’radical bar food’ from noon until 10pm.
THE INTERNET BOOKING service, 5pm.co.uk, has expanded into Edinburgh after a successful test in Glasgow. The brainchild of restaurateurs Ronnie Sommerfield and DaVid MCGUire, the on-line operation posts discounted meals for early evening dining at a variety of venues. In some cases restaurants appear to be offering — or simply advertising — little more than their pre-theatre menus. But plenty of good deals are to be found, With a number of places including a complementary glass of wine, beer or other promotional drink.
Side Dishes had a recent opportunity to reserve a table Via the web site (www.5pm.co.uk). While slightly cheesed off by the registration form, we found that booking was straightforward and confirmed by e- mail. The two-c0urse meal, complementary wine and a Surprise glass of champagne, at less than £16 for two went down a treat, it must be said.
BASS TAVERNS PLANS to open another O'Neill's Irish theme pub on 151 West George Street in Glasgow. The new venture will keep late club hours in the same manner as the branch on Sauchiehall Street. As the building will undergo major refurbishment, including a new glazed frontage, an opening is not envisaged for another year.
