Sound’s Mekon. See Clubs for preview I Cousteau The Attic, Dyer’s Close, 71 Cowgate, 225 8382. 7.30 pm. £5 adv. Heart-wrenching ballads from Liam McKahey and friends. Think Tindersticks with self confidence and more quiffs and you’re on the way.

Glasgow

I Doves and Goldfrapp The Arches, Midland Street, 221 4001. 7.30pm. £8.50 plus booking fee. Mancunian melodicists (is that a word?) whose Mercury Music Prize-nominated album Lost Souls was at least half as good as people said it was. The former vocalist with It Bites who, at the height of their mercifully brief ‘fame’, was known for modelling a nice line in white vests and streaked hair.
