Nibble on this news

JAMES SANKEY, FORMER group manager of the Atrium restaurant and blue bar café, says the prospects are 'looking strong at the moment' for Oloroso, a new roof- top bar/ restaurant in George Street, Edinburgh. With partner Tony Singh, ITV Chef of the Year 2000 who ran the kitchen on the Britannia and was sous chef at Martin's Restaurant before that, Sankey views the new venue up and running in the spring.

Backed by a group of investors, the plan is to offer a retreat from the elements (and perhaps the cacophony of George Street) with a bar and restaurant offering fully glazed views of the Forth and the city skyline as well as the added attraction of a terrace. Richard Murphy Architects have drawn a contemporary interior design, stating Frank Lloyd Wright and Carlo Scarpa as influences.

While the bar will offer a range of ‘global street food' such as pasta, pizza and tapas, the restaurant at Oloroso (Spanish for fragrant) will up the ante with locally sourced ingredients prepared with Mediterranean and Eastern influences.

IN GLASGOW’S WEST End, a new bar/ grill called Papagayo should soon fill

A late night extension for Bann UK

the space left by the late, lamented Joe’s Garage at 50—52 Bank Street. With an emphasis on quality service, Papagayo will open at 8am daily and keep going until 1am at the weekend. Food should range from a full family breakfast at the weekend to an a la carte char-grill selection at night until about 11pm, with lunch, pre-theatre and tapas (5—9pm) in between. The hope is for a launch around Friday 8 December.

FINALLY, BANN UK, 5 Hunter Square, Edinburgh, will begin Saturday 9 December to keep late, late hours as a Friday and Saturday venue for drinks (beer, wine, fruit juices, coffee and teas) and light bites such as tapas. David Bann and chef Angus Stephens call it Urbann Hang Suite, targeting those who seek a 'mellow end' to their weekend nights out. Based on its success during the Festival, the 33m closing allows the well-reviewed and recently renovated vegetarian restaurant to offer table-service and ambient music by 015 after the dinner hours end at 10.30pm. Occasional drinks promos and events will run throughout the year, while a 'filter’ at the door will ensure the mood remains mild. Throughout the rest of the week, groups can hire (with prior notice) Bann UK until 3am for parties or events.
