impressive, moving from slow, floating. ethereal themes like Peacocks “Voice from the Past' or Crispell's evocative ‘Silence (for P.)' through to scurrying, uptempo workouts like Motian's 'Morpion'. The music may be a little too abstract for those with more mainstream jazz leanings. but the open- minded will find the clarity and invention of their musical thought processes matched by the empathy of their group interaction. JAMES MACMILLAN Symphony No 2 (BIS) 0000
The Swedish BIS label continue their ongoing documentation of James MacMiIIan’s music with another excellent disc. featuring the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. conducted by the composer. The centrepiece is his Symphony No 2. dedicated to novelist (and fellow Ayrshireman) Andrew O'Hagan for his
f (1991), and the less highly charged. folk-
support during the sectarianism controversy which MacMiIIan's Edinburgh Festival lecture stirred up. This is a powerful performance of that often spare but always emotive work. and the disc also includes equally compelling accounts of his earlier Sinfon/etta
influenced Cumnock Fair (1998/99). (Kenny Mathieson)
ELECTRONIC THE AVALANCHES
Since I left You (XL Recordings) 0000.
To start. take a half dozen Australians. Add some musical instruments, a bunch of sampling technology and a healthy dollop of tongue in cheek wit.
Whip in a case of cheap
tequila and a few cases
of out of date keg shandy and you have The Avalanches.
For the main course. cut and paste together
uneven handfuls of 80s pop (Madonna. Kid
Creole). slapstick funk. spastic breakbeats.
wobbly piano tinkles and § squelching mini moogs. L Top the whole melange
off with a liberal sprinkling of TV show samples, helium vocals snatches. fair ground ambience. ocean liner horns and bits nicked from operas.
A real recipe for success. Those not enjoying such a delicacy from now until Christmas clearly have no taste. (Mark Robertson)
