Take two art school graduates With barista experience. add the skills of someone who managed the first Seattle-style espresso bars in Scotland. throw in a $5.000 loan from the Prince's Youth Busmess Trust and you get the quixotically named Where The Monkey Sleeps. This new coffee Outlet - and gallery space on West Regent Street at Blythswood Square in Glasgow plans to beat the corporate chains at their own game. And given that the trio 01 young proprietors all worked at Starbucks. they know what they're up against.

Artists Jim McQuade and Gregor Donaldson met fellow Monkey man Andy Yates at the British-owned Seattle Coffee Co some tours ago. Yates. with a Napier Unrversrty hospitality management degree. was integral in bringing Oregonian approach to cappuccmo outlets north of the border. managing all three Seattle Coffee company branches at various times. They stuck together long enough to see Starbucks multi— million p0und takeover. After a break. the three reunited to do their own thing. with a twist.

Their basement Operation in a former antique shop otters three separate gallery spaces with a central island bar. In addition to a full range of espresso-based coffees. they offer toast and cereal for breakfast. four soups and a range of sandwiches for lunch and evening snacks. Open from 7am—1 1pm during the standard working week and from a more civilised morning hour till 1 1pm on weekends. the Monkey plans live music and comedy acts and Will accommodate those who wish to BYOB. While the inaugural art exhibition features Lomo-like photography of the shop in various stages of construction. next up is a joint exhibition by Susan Roan (Royal College of Art) and sculptor John Donaldson. Exhibiting artists will change monthly and they hope to coax art students often too sheepish to get their work hung - to use the space. were going to force them to exhibit.‘ McOuade says matter-of- factly.
