ANNIVE HSAHY BIRTHDAY SPECIAL

Arnold Brown: ‘one of the finest comedy talents that Scotland has ever produced’

The Stand, Glasgow, Fri 13 & Sat 14 Apr.

The shelf life of any comedy club is never guaranteed, as anyone who is involved in comedy will testify, so any significant anniversary is at once refreshing and reassuring. Already firmly established in Edinburgh, The Stand took a calculated gamble when it expanded through to Glasgow, but now, exactly one year on, and with a 25-year lease on the premises, The Stand looks set to become a permanent fixture in Glasgow’s West End.

Over 20,000 people have passed through the doors in the last twelve months and director Tommy Sheppard is pleased with the clientele the club attracts: ‘We have a slightly older, more thoughtful audience and while we encourage people to drink, it’s not a drunken environment - we actively discourage the bearpit atmosphere pub

gigs have become.’

These pub gigs have so far been the main competition, but rumour has it The Stand faces a fierce rival in the form of comedy chain Jongleurs. ‘There is not a finite appetite for laughter among the Scottish population,’ Sheppard explains. ‘There is room for more clubs in both Glasgow and Edinburgh and if Jongleurs come to Glasgow, we would take that as a compliment that they recognise we’ve done well enough for others to make

money out of it too.‘

The Stand will mark its first birthday in a gig headlined by the man who opened the club, Arnold Brown. The Perrier award-winner was the obvious choice for Sheppard: ‘Arnold is one of the finest comedy talents that Scotland has ever produced and is a Glaswegian, so it seems fitting that he should be the person to tread the

boards at the birthday party.’

May Brown and The Stand enjoy many happy returns. (Maureen Ellis)
