These include hip hop scratch meisters Richie Ruftone and Dec J A La Fu. drum & bass honcho DJ Te'l. and Glasgow‘s omnipresent breaks and beats heroes The Jengaheads.

Ritchie Ruftone makes a killing on the new nights explosion

Last month, as the rain came down and Wilkie House shut up shop. you could have been forgiven for being more than a little glum about the state of Edinburgh's club scene. But something is stirring in the darkness. It's called spring. and it

seems to have woken a few people up.

Edinburgh University‘s Fresh Air FM is broadcasting from May on 87.7FM, and features slots for Manga. Sublime and Joy. lt celebrates its tenth birthday with Ten at The Honeycomb. featuring hip hop. house and drum 8. bass from Scottish DMC champ Ritchie Ruftone and The Jengaheads. among others. Future guests at the monthly Thursday riighter

l (provisionally entitled The Fresh Air Sessions) include Groove Armada.

Another club night that ain't just a club night is Underground Solu’shn whose crew man the Cockburii Street record l shop of the same name. Residents at this house. hip-hop and rare groove night taking place at The Honeycomb include

George T, DJ Simone and Ritchie Ruftone.

But if you think the swanky, new venue has got a monopoly on new club nights, you're sorely mistaken. The SmileHigh : Club at Gala is a glammed-up Easter Sunday one-off that could become a regular fixture. and features Huggy Bugger

. Queen and Ben Oath of Miss Moneypenny‘s fame. Anyone looking for a more underground vibe might find it chez Sputnik at the Venue. which kicks off with Ultragroove's; Colin Cook and hopes to make Thursdays ‘the new Saturdays'. Darker still is Noa‘s new drum & bass and electro adveiilti'e Nocturnal, running on Wednesdays which must. by a process of elimination, be the new Friday.

Over at The Wee Red Bar. Spectral offers ‘pitch black house and techno' monthly Fridays, and anyone feeling overwhelmed should at least be able to feel their way to Texture at La Belle. which kicks off on the same night (13 April) with DJ Lottie. Last but not least. typographical pranksters @ round things up for a Saturday night with Crispin .l Glover's funky house and Mr Ruftone's omnipresent scratchy hip hop selection. (James Smart)
