effect. The visual style is unremarkable. nevertheless it‘s a commendable example of low-key British filmmaking. Adam Smith Theatre. Kirkcaldy.

The Long Goodbye ( 18) 0000. (Robert Altman. US. 1973) Elliott Gould. Sterling Hayden. Nina Van Pallandt. 1 12 mins. A shock to the system for Raymond Chandler aficionados. this iconoclastic contemporary Marlowe mystery features a shambling. unkempt Gould engagingly shuffling through a troupe of shady characters including a missing pal. a mysterious woman and the alcoholic Hayden. Surpisingly agreeable. Adam Smith Theatre. Kirkcaldy.

The Matrlx (15) eeeee (The Wachowski Brothers. L'S/Australia. 1999) Keanu Reeves. Laurence Fishbum. Carrie- Anne Moss. 136 mins. Absolutely gob- smacking science fiction thriller boasting cutting edge special effects. rocking action sequences. a smart story and an immensely entertaining cartoon sensibility (the film was storyboarded by comic artist Geoff Darrow). 1n the future day-to-day life is merely a scam. a matrix camouflaging reality: a post- apocalyptic nightmare world in which humankind are a power source for domineering super-computers. Only Reeves' cyber hero. Neo. and a gang of hacker pirates stand between the evil technology and their race's extinction. MacRobert. Stirling.

Medea (15) 0.. (Pier Paolo Pasolini. Italy. 1969) Maria Callas. Giuseppe Gentile. Massimo Girotti. 118 mins. Opera diva Callas was a brave choice for the lead in Pasolini's version of Euripides. but as the high priestess wreaking her revenge on the lover who betrays her. the expected sparks fail to fly. Still. the director‘s trademark barren landscape adds immensely to the film's distinctive visuals. Lumiere. Edinburgh.

Memento (15) eeeee (Christopher Nolan. US. 2000) Guy Pearce. Carrie-Ann Moss. Joe Pantoliano. 116 mins. Beginning where most other films would end with an act of vengeance. writer-director Nolan tells his story by gradually working backwards in time. Leonard Shelby (Pearce) is obsessed with avenging his wife‘s rape and murder.

Trouble is Leonard suffers from a condition of short-term memory loss. and so he relies on an elaborate system of mementoes maps. polaroids. body tattoos - to piece together the clues in his investigation. A compelling. elliptical reconstruction of the revenge thriller. which skilfully examines the connections between memory. identity and perception. L'GC. Edinburgh.

The Mexlcan (15) 00.. (Gore Verbinski. US. 2001 ) Julia Roberts. Brad Pitt. James Gandolfini. 123 mins. Though it pairs two of Hollywood‘s most bankablc and attractive stars. Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts. The Mexican plays like a low budget indie film. Pitt‘s dumb dude Jerry is sent to Mexico by the mob to recover the eponymous cursed antique pistol. Of course. this supposedly simple task turns out to be anything but. not least because Jerry‘s having ‘relationship issues‘ with his girlfriend. the uptight Samantha (Roberts). Full of double crosses and unfortunate accidents. plus a five star performance from The Sopranos‘ Gandolftni. the story twists and turns in a constantly amusing manner. General release.

Mlaa Congenlallty (12) 0

(Donald Petrie. US. 2001) Sandra Bullock. Michael Caine. Candice Bergen. l 10mins. Bullock's Gracie Hart considers herselfjust one of the guys in the FBI. So she's none too thrilled when she is chosen to infiltrate the ranks of ‘bikini stuffers' in the Miss United States Pageant in a bid to catch a Unabomber-like terrorist. The galumphing. charmless Gracie needs a makeover. Cue Caine‘s defrocked pageant guru to attempt the most miraculous transformation since Henry Higgins got hold of Eliza Doolittle. Bullock throws herself whole-heartedly into the proceedings. submitting her character to a series of undignified pratfalls. As the movie's producer. she only has herself to blame. General release.

Monty Python’a Meanlng Of Llfe (18) 0.. (Terry Jones. UK. 1983) John Cleese. Graham Chapman. Michael Palin. Eric Idle. 103 mins.
