This ambitious. multi-layered epic drama exposes the confusion. hypocrisy and sheer futility of America‘s war on drugs. Three interwoven storylines - involving decent cop Del Toro. conservative ()hiojudge Douglas. the country‘s newly appointed new drug czar. and well-heeled society wife Zeta- Jones s— show how the drug trade touches and corrupts every level of society on both sides of the US-Mexico border. Using different film stocks and teclmiques. Soderbergh provides each of these storylines with a distinct look while linking them with persistent use of hand-held cameras. which gives the film an air of documentary authenticity and gripping immediacy. Based on a true story. this wry comedy set in a home near Toulon for the physically and mentally handicapped cheerfully dismantles taboos around the sexuality of disabled people. The cantankerous Rene (Gourmet) is a former union activist. now confined to a wheelchair with a wasting disease. who‘s determined to get laid before his condition deteriorates even further. Julie (Nadia Kaci) is the inexperienced new nurse. who decides to find a prostitute prepared to satisfy Rene‘s sexual needs. A real crowd-pleaser. (EFT. Glasgow.

This hopeless slasher-flick opens with a bevy of teenage beauties being inexcusably mean to a goofy classmate at a Valentines ball. culminating in one of the popular gang falsely accusing him of sexual assault. Understandably. the guy's a bit miffed and retunis to hack the lot of them to hits while wearing a mildly scary mask. after sending them mildly scary Valentines cards. A benchmark for cinematic aw fulness.

A spin doctor cooks tip a fictitious war to help a [S President through a tricky and scandal-tilled re-election campaign all done-and-dusted well before (‘linton's Monica l.ew insky scandal surfaced. But otitside its frighteningly impeccable timing. this Mamet-scripted satire comes in heavy handed form. As one ‘problem' after another is encountered and solved. the cool. ironic tone of the opening section is rapidly replaced by one of simple hysteria. (‘anieo. lidinburgh.

Romantic comedies are filled with beautiful people who can't get dates. l.ope/. hot from dumping Puff Daddy and scorching the transatlantic pop charts. is the latest absurdly attractive babe having trouble in the romance department. She plays ltalian-American Mary More who plans other people‘s weddings. When a handsome doctor (Mc(‘onaughey) saves her from certain death. her troubles seem to he over. except for the fact that Mc('onaughey is engaged to he married in a ceremony organised by Lope] herself. The pacing gets sluggish as the wedding bells start to chime. and dtibiotis acting combine with every cliche in the book to make this an ultimately forgettable movie. Magnum 'l‘healre. (iibson's divorced. playboy advertising executive is a testosterone-fuelled chauvinist whose brand of tits 'n' ass ad campaigns have long exceeded their sell-by date. His company. however. wants to reach female consumers and has given the topjob to a woman (llunt). But. following an accident. the exec wakes tip to discover he's able to hear women‘s unspoken thoughts. a gift which scores him brownie points all round. (iibson twinkles roguishly in the lead role and handles the film's scenes of screwball farce well. But he's let down by a lack of chemistry with his co-star. Showcase Cinema. (ilasgow'; Showcase. Brendan. a nerdy linglish teacher who loves old movies. has his world turned arse over tit when Trudy struts up to him in a pub and demands he buy her a pint. From there the two embark on a relationship that takes in wild sex and nocturnal law break- ing. This is filmic equivalent of Angel Delight: light. fluffy. sugary and unadulter- ated indulgent fun.
