The Brecker Brothers established their initial reputation in the 705 with a crunching blend of jazz-rock and electric funk, but the line-up which returns to the festival on the closing night is an altogether more acoustic, jazz-orientated affair. Saxophonist Michael Brecker and his trumpet-playing brother, Randy Brecker, are joined by the sensational David Kikoski on piano, the ubiquitous Peter Washington on bass, and drummer Carl Allen in a classic jazz quintet which seems unlikely to break into a chorus of ‘East River’ (although you never can tell), but should serve up some memorable music. A couple of years ago, another former electric fusion outfit, Steps Ahead, also reverted to a more acoustic format in the final night slot, and produced one of the most enjoyable concerts 1 can remember hearing in the festival. My money is on the Breckers doing likewise.
