JO ENRIGHT

The Stand. Edinburgh. Thu 5 Jul: The Stand. Glasgow. Fri 6 & Sat 7 Jul: and CDT. The Stand. Glasgow. Sun 8 Jul: The Stand. Edinburgh. Tue 10 Jul.

Fame doesn‘t come easy these days. You work for years building up a name for yourself, touring around the country, working gigs in sleazy men’s pubs and then you get your big break: Jaffa Cakes. And not just Jaffa Cakes. Then comes the Chicken Tonight and Citroen cars. Once a highly-respected dwarf of the comedy world, Jo Enright is slowly edging her diminutive frame into big-time television, albeit through the advertising side entrance.

Her first ‘serious’ television acting

comedyolistcouk

Enright edges her elfin-like frame into the big time

debut was at the beginning of this year, playing a social worker with questionable social skills and matching perm in That Peter Kay Thing. But Enright is eager to get back to the live circuit, for the time being anyway: ‘If there are other things that you do, like write or act, then stand-up is a good road into other outlets for your writing or acting skills and this can lead

onto even bigger things.’

Much of Enright’s incisive observational set is derived from her upbringing in Birmingham. The city is an easy target for derision, but Enright’s unique personal perspective makes the jokes all the more cutting. It is these derogatory references to Birmingham which find special concordance north of the border. ‘l’ve got a tape of a gig I did at The Stand and you can feel the empathy there. Maybe it is a sense of being misunderstood, or being the butt of people's jokes; maybe there is a

parallel.’

The latest series of Big Brother hasn’t improved the reputation of Enright’s home city just yet, but she assures that fellow Brummie, and close friend of a friend, Dean, is a dark horse: ‘l’ve been watching Dean and he’s keeping it real for Birmingham. He’s very sincere and I've heard people say he’s boring, but you have to listen to content; I think he’s quietly witty.’ Not even the slightest hint of jealousy? Nah, the ‘famous for being famous’ route just isn’t Jo’s style. (Maureen Ellis)
