68 THE LIST 5—l9 Jul 2001

853;" SHOLCASE CHITTLIN’ HOEDOWN The 13th Note Club. Glasgow.

weekly Sun.

Sunday nights are now firmly established as the only option for promoters and DJs wishing to explore the outer reaches of music. The latest addition to the ever- expanding Sunday night family is Chittlin’ Hoedown. The name is something of a red herring, conjuring up images of Deep South rednecks, line-dancing away to choice country and western cuts and, to confuse matYErs further, the club comes complete with a wilfully obscure back-story involving Gary Coleman and hand-carved penny- whistles. Once you cut through the diversionary tactics, the night, like all the best clubs, is about dedicated music fans playing the songs they love in the spirit of good old-fashioned fun.

Even cowboys are welcome at this night of good ‘ole-fashioned fun.

‘We did just start the night for a laugh,‘ says Gary Lindsay. ‘We wanted to hear our own music over a big sound system, which means you’ll get to hear pretty much everything. I can't think of anything we wouldn’t play. It tends towards hip-hop, dub and electro, but you’ll get, I don’t know, a band

like Fugazi as well.’

‘We decided not to bother too much about attempting to be skilled or get into the idea of having any kind of style,’ fellow DJ Charlie McCann adds, ‘if one of us finds an LP of Bavarian drinking tunes, we’ll play it’.

Still in it’s infancy, Chittlin’ Hoedown is building a following among clubbers who prefer a wide-ranging playlist but don’t feel the need to go all-out on the Sabbath. ‘The main thing is keeping it diverse,’ says Lindsay. ‘We try to make sure that it’s chilled, but not too chilled, so that people can just sit and listen or have a dance if they want to.’

As for future plans, Chittlin’ Hoedown is sticking to unconventional methods of pulling in the punters. ‘Right now, we’re just trying to build up the night, and we do plan to get guest bands and DJs in,’ Lindsay says. ‘At the moment, though, we’re concentrating on getting the National Air Guitar

Championships.’ (Jack Mottram)
