(‘orelli and the Doctor's beautiful daughter. Pelagia (Crux). fall in forbidden love. Madden has stuck to his guns and made a movie at once distinctly European and likely to appeal to American audiences. Commercial. unfaithful to the book. but still head and shoulders above any of the eye candy Hollywood has to offer. Selected release.

Cats 8 Dogs (PG) 0.. (Lawrence Guterman. US. 2001 ) Jeff Goldblum. Elizabeth Perkins. Miriam Margoyles. 87 mins. This refreshing approach to cute talking pets films is a kind of subversive Lassie meets Mission: Imlmssihle. These dogs don‘t just talk. they use surveillance equipment and have a solemn mission to protect scientist Goldblum as he invents a cure for dog allergies. The cats are evil. hell- bent on conquering the world; their special agents have deadly ninja skills and vicious weapons. The animatronic effects are of a pretty high standard. but it's the animal trainers you‘re in real awe of. The occasional wander into sentimental territory and slowing up of pace can be forgiven by the madly original idea. lively action sequences and knockabout humour. See review. General release.

Chocoiat ( I 2) O. (Lasse Hallstrom. US. 200i ) Juliette Binoche. Johnny Depp. Judi Dench. 12! mins. Adapted from Joanne Harris's novel. Chocolar unfolds ‘once upon a time‘ in a tranquil French village where sexy unwed single mother Vianne (Binoche) opens up a chocolaterie during Lent. Her magical confections are soon having a liberating effect on various locals. though her actions incur the wrath of the reigning count (Alfred Molina). who fears that the traditional order may be irrevocably damaged. Unfortunately. Hallstrom's (The Cider House Rules) feelgood fairytale relies on its calculatedly cosmopolitan cast and glossy production values to disguise its lack of substance. The Lumiere. Edinburgh. Cirque Du Soleil (U) 000 Showcasing the skills ofa French circus group. plus some new simulation ride technology. The plot is weak and a little too slow. and perhaps inappropriately symbolic for kids. but the expertly choreographed dance scenes and colourful backgrounds are admirably presented. UGC. Edinburgh. Digimons are not relatives of Pokemons but do share some traits. being odd-looking and fighting when requested by pre-teen masters. Essentially Digimon offers a beginners guide in three parts. Farrah Faw cett. mins. 75-year- old veteran director Robert Altman. in tandem with Cookie 's Fortune screenwriter Anne Rapp. delivers an uneven. yet frequently enjoyable satire on Dallas society. and in particular its expensively pampered females. A loose riff on the biblical story of Job. the patriarch whose patience was tested by bizarre events. Dr T And The Women sees Altman Use his trademark overlapping dialogue and (Mid tracking shots to express one of his favourite themes how meaningless chatter has replaced meaningful communication in modem society. Highland Theatre. ()ban. Dracula 2001 (15) 000 (Patrick Lussier. CS. 2001) Gerald Butler. Christopher Plummer. Johnny Lee Millar. 99 mins. In this contemporary take on Bram Stoker's horror classic Abraham van Helsing (Plummer) has kept Dracula locked up in a vault for the past 100 years. The secrecy with which van Helsing guards it. however. draws the attention of robbers and their tomb raiding succeeds in releasing the prince of darkness (Glasgow-born actor Butler doing an okay job). Thereafter the action transfers to New ()rleans. It was only a matter of time before the most famous horror villain of all was given the Scream treatment. but this Wes Craven-produced film fails to deliver; Dracula 200/ feels more like a Hammer era B-movie. ()deon. Glasgow.

Duck Soup (U) 0000 (Leo McCare). US. I933) Groucho. Chico. Harpo. Zeppo. Margaret Dumont. Louis Calhem. 70 mins. The true story of Ed Gein has been the foundation for three of the finest horror movies in the canon. Coming at the tale of this simple man and serial killer extraordinaire in different ways. Psycho went for the domineering mum angle. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre adopted the isolated nutter approach. while The Silence 0/ The Lambs fleshed out Ed's skirt trade. In lid (iein. there's a bit of all three. but they‘re all filmed in a ham-fisted. campy and ultimately utterly banal way. Cameo & UGC. Edinburgh.

Elvis Live: That’s The Way It is - Special Edition (U) 0000 (Denis Sanders. US. 200i ) 97 mins. Sanders‘ original documentary. chronicling The King’s first stage shows in more than a decade (time spent developing an almighty drug habit and appearing in terrible rom- com musicals). was a soporific affair. This Special Edition. boasting around 40 new minutes. is a revelation with four more songs and loads more insider footage. Within seven years Elvis was dead. a bloated parody of what he was here. This is one musical and historical document you do not want to miss. Filmhouse. Edinburgh. The Emperor’s New Groove (U) 0.. (Mark Dindal. US. 2001) David Spade. John Goodman. Eartha Kitt. 78 mins. Emperor Kuzco is monarch of an unspecified South American land who is turned into a llama by his scheming assistant Yzma (voiced most appropriately by Kitt) during a botched assassination attempt. The llama emperor goes on the run and is befriended by good-willed herder Pacha (Goodman). who helps return his four-legged ruler to his throne. There are the occasional clever postmodern touches _ Kuzco stopping the film reel to talk to the audience but mostly this is prime old- school Disney stuff. It lacks the animated landscape innovations of Tarzan. nor does it enjoy the character development of Aladin. which is why. ultimately. its missing edge. UGC. Edinburgh; Moviehouse. Motherwell.
