COMEDY SCARY MOVIE 2 (18) 82 mins

Definitely not that funny

The Wayans Keenan, Marlon, Craig and Shawn seem to have made careers from being cultural magpies. From Keenan's Blaxploitation movie ‘tribute', I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, their piss—taking has usually come after someone else has done it, making them look like the kids who are still trying to get a laugh after the

punchline is long gone.

Scary Movie took Scream and American Pie two self-consciously post- modern movies in their own right and took the rip. It was silly enough to pass as fun in places. but this is just woeful. How bad is it? Let me try and convey. Out of the two or three laughs generated by this ‘comedy‘, at least one of them was uttered from the lips of Tori Spelling. Answer your question?

Tim Curry is a university lecturer keen on trying to prove the existence of life after death so obviously he has to get a group of students to act as bait for a resident poltergeist. Cue band of misfits the busty seductress, the blunted. afro-puffed hip hop kid, the dippy, desperate blonde chick fighting a crap old dude in a sheet. James Woods even shows up at the start, surely a victim of

some cruel joke by his agent?

In a cinematic environment where pastiche, homage. paying tribute (call it what you will) is positively encouraged, this is clear evidence that the trick is very much knowing when to stOp. It took seven people to write this piece of shit. By my calculations. that's not even a joke each. (Mark Robertson)

DRAMA SUSPICIOUS RIVER (18) 92 mins «0

‘What's there to tell,‘ intones the strangely detached voice-over of Leila (Molly Parker). 'I was born in Suspicious River, I grew up here and now I live here.’ But now trapped in a loveless marriage. the young motel receptionist yearns to leave this remote Canadian town. To raise funds she begins selling sexual services to customers from work, which is how she encounters and falls in love with the violent drifter Gary (Callum Keith Rennie). Who, though. is the mysterious girl whom Leila sees feeding the swans down by the river? Adapted from the Laura Kasischke novel, this is the follow-up by writer- director Lynne Stopkewich to her tender necrophiliac (yep) drama Kissed. A troubling, opaque work, Suspicious River is less concerned with depicting the sexually masochistic acts of its protagonist than in conveying the state-of-mind of a

woman numbed by childhood trauma. Parker delivers a deliberater somnambulistic performance. her pallid features drained of emotion, and the fluid editing and stylised compositions also help maintain the dream-like mood, although the film's bleak detachment militates against the viewer's emotional engagement with the material.
