BENEFIT NIGHT

LIVE AID 4 . . . GLASGOW WOMEN’S AID

Live Aid 4 . . . Glasgow Women’s Aid, Benfrew Ferry, Sun 30 Sep.

What makes a benefit night work? According to Glasgow Women’s Aid, it takes a night ‘filled with live music and laughter’ to raise the much-needed funds.

In the 28 years that Glasgow’s Women’s Aid has existed, it has relied solely on donations to allow it to offer support, information and accommodation for women in need. The women who get in contact are being physically, emotionally or sexually abused by a partner, ex-partner or someone close to them and are in desperate need of help. Women’s Aid is recognised as the key provider of

Glasgow life

Mary Kiani

domestic abuse services in the UK. The Glasgow organisation alone has set up seven refuges and housed in excess of 3,500 women and 4,500 children. It is hardly surprising that funds are required, and benefit nights provide an enjoyable way of raising not only cash but awareness.

The entertainment comes in the form of live music, comedians, magicians, fire eaters and competitions. Pat Kane of Hue & Cry puts his debts behind him to perform, along with Mary Kiani who will be accompanied by Take Note, a glorious 25-piece choir. Other acts are Karine Polwart, favourite folk singer Carol Laula, all-women drummers She Boom and the totally unpredictable antics of Mischief La-Bas. As Glasgow Women’s Aid says, ‘a night of complete entertainment’. (Jane Hamilton)
