Something for everyon

Where was a time when eating out in Scotland was a pretty predictable affair. especially at Christmas. Partying with colleagues. friends and family was an endless round of turkey. turkey and ....turkey. to which most people would give a festive thumbs down. Not anymore. Glasgow and Edinburgh today offer a range of estab- lishmenls to rival almost anywhere. This dazzling array. while exciting. can be a bewrldering experience. making decisions on just where to go for the office Christmas lunch even more difficult and leaving Us longing for the less eclectic. safe as houses. turkey treadmill. PARTY

We have selected some of the best and most interesting venues in the cities to help navigate a gastronomic course through the impenetrable number of restaurant options. All the featured eateries will. of course. offer traditional festive fare as part of their unique and orig- inal menus. but those who want a break from the Christmas norm will find themselves spoilt for choice and large parties are particularly welcome. CHOICE

At Firebird. near Kelvingrove Art (iallcry. they pride themselves on having one of only a few wood burning pizza ovens in Scotland which gives an unmistakable. delicious srnokiness. to the food. About 70‘}; of the menu ingredients are organically produced. something that chef/patron Derrick Sutherland is justifiably proud. The West End of the city has an atmosphere of its own and nowhere is this better illustrated than in the award winning Brel. Situated in Ashton Lane. Brel specialises in Belgian influenced cuisine with conti- nental beers and a keenly priced wine list (look out for the bargains under £ll) a bottle). Staying in the west

of the city. Cottiers provides a menu of the best of

South American cuisine and offers one of the most interesting dining experiences in Scotland. (‘ottier‘s can accommodate large parties and regularly features live entertainment. The theatre is also available for cor- porate events such as ccilidhs. (‘heck it out.

For anyone in a New York state of mind. the Baby Grand at Charing Cross is the answer this Christmas. This cafe/bar was one of the very first of its kind in the

city and. lb years down the line. has a loyal clientele who enjoy the chargrilled lunch and dinner menus. The long. slim. Baby (Brand bar allows guests to imag- ine they are in downtown Manhattan while enjoying live piano music and. incidentally. one of the best breakfasts in (ilasgow. Blackfriars. in the heart of Merchant ('ity. is a nostalgic reminder of the kind of pub (ilasgow used to be famous for. Never short on atmosphere. Blackfriars is regularly the centre of music and comedy evenings in the downstairs part of the building. The Christmas menu here is very well hal- anced. Salmon fillet with lemon butter. tender roast beef with caramelised shallots and a vegetarian parcel lift pub grub to a memorable high. Not far away. in another historic part of the city. the newly launched Cathedral House lets customers enjoy their festive lunch and dinner in the shadow of (ilasgow Cathedral. This unique location is perfect for a christmas function in the upstairs dinning room and revellers can continue the party later in the atmospheric downstairs bar.

(TL'BAN CHRISTMAS

Particularly good are the speciality sausages like chicken. tarragon and leek. and the veni- son burgers. The food is the star in Ad l.ih. BOOKING
