84 THE LIST 11-18 Oct 2001

GUEST DJ DJ DEEP

Foot Therapy at Alaska, Glasgow, Fri 5 Oct; District at Noa, Edinburgh, Sat

6 Oct.

‘Being a DJ is a nightmare. When it’s beautiful, it’s beautiful but ninety percent of the time people don’t really get into it - especially because it’s deep house and soulful and not so commercial. It seems like the less soul you have in your music, the more chances it has to be successful.’ Parisian producer and DJ Cyril Etienne aka DJ Deep has been fighting the good fight of underground house music for some years. He served a lengthy apprenticeship under Laurent Garnier at the now legendary parties at the Rex Club and although still relatively unknown outside of France, Deep’s diehard devotion to soulful garage and New Jersey-style house is finally paying off. Earlier this year he released the fourth instalment of the Respect is Burning mix series - Respect To DJ Deep - and his presence is set to be further felt on this side of the channel as he steps up his DJ dates

across the UK.

Averse to the filtered French disco sound that was the all the rage last year, Deep instead describes his style as ‘roots house music’. ‘As a DJ, I like to try to play as many styles as possible,’ he explains. ‘I hate people who, for instance, only play vocal house for three hours. I think any kind of music which is exactly the same for three hours becomes extremely boring so I think it’s always nice to exchange things with people and try to give to people as much as I can.

‘l’m always interested in different fusions because, for me, house music is really the music of fusions. It has so many influences that it’s always nice to explore sometimes on the more electronic side, sometimes on the more African or Latin side. If you stick to one style and you keep doing the same thing for hours, it just puts me to sleep,

you know?’

Thankfully, there’ll be no snoozing when the determined DJ Deep hits up-and-coming underground house party District. And, with any luck, having spent the evening in the good company of District’s underground dance daddies Adrian Milarski and Craig Smith, Deep won’t think it’s so much of a nightmare being a DJ.
