PUPPET THEATRE THE SONG FROM THE SEA Touring, check listings .0. Anyone who doesn’t believe in love at first sight should take a closer look at little Josh here. Shona Reppe’s creation is a winsomely charming puppet you immediately want to take home with you, proving that the merchandisers have got it wrong all along - it’s not just t-shirts and videos kids want. After a slow beginning, the first appearance of little Josh, expertly and endearingly manipulated and voiced by Stewart Cairns, quickly livens things up. Josh lives in a very noisy house, and being the

Kids

youngest member, the rest of his family are too busy getting on with their own lives to listen to little Josh. Only when his grandmother takes the time to turn off the television, can Josh explain about the song he constantly hears, before she indulges his story and allows him to take her on a

journey to find its source.

An ingeniously designed set gives a real sense of space to the production —- skyscrapers pop out of hidden compartments, the sea rises from nowhere, and shimmering dolphins and all manner of sea creatures

mesmerise a bewitched audience.

The story is secondary to the visual spectacle, faltering towards the end with a difficult episode of narrative which stretches little imaginations to their limit. However the attention to detail in the show is fascinating and is the source of much humour in the simplest of scenes. With actors, puppets and a composer all visible on stage and integral in the production, it may have caused confusion, but the professionalism and belief minimised the bewilderment. Now, where do I get one of those puppets? (Maureen Ellis)
