Glasgow life

There has never been a time of so much interest in war and weaponry and the effect that they have on human life. It is therefore poignant that Scottish CND organised its second blockade at Faslane Nuclear Submarine Base before the events of 11 September.

Since the first Faslane demonstration in February, the world has changed immeasurably and CND is campaigning harder than ever to stop the use of nuclear weapons. Whether recent events will affect the numbers at the OKBLOK remain to be seen, although if the large turnout at the nightly peace vigils in Glasgow is anything to go by it will be well attended. According to John Ainslie of Scottish CND, it is still expecting a substantial number of people, many of them coming from Ireland, England and further afield. Last February’s blockade attracted over 1000 people making it the largest protest of its kind in Scotland and bringing Faslane to a standstill

for the day.

Protesters are encouraged to bring instruments and dress up, making it a colourful, peaceful and non-violent protest. Although 385 people were arrested at the last blockade, people can still demonstrate safely without any police intervention. The policy on mass arrests looks set to change after Tommy Sheridan was recently found not guilty on his breach of the peace charge from the last blockade. As Sheridan says: ‘It puts in question the whole process of mass arrests.‘ More importantly he believes that ‘every citizen has a right to protest against these weapons.’
