by do we need gay

festivals? At a time

when you can’t turn on a soap without some gay storyline competing for attention, when gay is so everyday, do we still need festivals? Glasgay is an opportunity to party, to connect, to see provocative work that is inspiring, which helps us define who we are.

Run by a small, dedicated team with not a lot of public funding, Glasgay still comes up with the goods. It’s a modest festival, but it crosses the spectrum of art forms, and is available in all manner of venues throughout the city. The programme choice is wide, eclectic. Glasgay’s community outreach element is crucial with projects involving short videos from the LIPS group, photography and writing from the young Bi-G—LES group, lesbian portraiture and information exchanges with the Equality Network.

MY BEST FRIEND’S WEDDING/T HE NEXT BEST THING

Grosvenor Cinema, Fri 26 Oct, Sat 3 Nov.

Rupert Everett is the only out Hollywood star of his generation and his charms are on display in the double bill My Best Friend '8 Wedding (a hit) and The Next Best Thing (a dud.) He has set a trend in recent romantic comedies: the heroine must have a gay. sexless best friend. so he!pful at advice regarding matters of the heart. rejection and interior design.

Thank goodness Everett has a sex scene with a dishy surgeon in The Next Best Thing, though this is hardly surprising considering its director is John Schlesinger. Schlesinger was responsible in 1971 for the greatest gay film ever. Sunday. Bloody Sunday with the infamous male to male kiss hetwe 3n Murray Head and Peter Finch. if you look closely at his other movies. from Darling to Midnight Cowboy to Pacific Heights they are peopled by gay characters. though often subsidiary.

Everett and Madonna's movie is much more overtly gay. it's just unfortunate the Hollywood studios interfered. it still manages to examine gay men with their fathers. and gay men as parents with complexity. It'll be interesting to see what sort of parts Everett will play next. His crazed, transvestite performance in Tennessee Williams' The Milk Train DoeSn’t Stop Here Anymore at the Citizens‘ Theatre a few years ago demonstrated his scope and dare. (John Binnie)
