LESBIAN OUTREACH

OUT IN THE CITY Tron Theatre, GOMA G-Mac, times vary.

For women, Glasgay has two very different community outreach projects. Kathleen Little, the Dundee-trained photographer opens her exhibition of twenty lesbian portraits. Looking For The Girl at the Tron. In black and white, hand-printed. 20in by 24in, her p0rtraits are a collaboration with the sitters. 'They are shot against a plain background. all the focus is on the women's faces. allowing them to reveal what aspects of their personality they would like to share,’ she says.

Dykes In The City by LIPS has let three young women make their first short video. Mentored by poet Rachel Jury and filmmaker Lucinda Broadbent, the project began in June and now is ready for its public screening. Each woman got two days to shoot and two to edit. The films“ subject matters range from coming out to being assaulted by dental dams. ‘LIPS is somewhere to go that's not the pub or club.’ says one. “You don't get to know anyone out clubbing.‘ (John Binnie)

PHOTOGRAPHY TYPICAL MEN GOMA, Fri 26 Oct & Sun 27 Jan.

This photography exhibition from Nottingham's Djanogly Gallery. needs to be seen to be believed. Beautiful, provocative images of men from male photographers from around the world explore what it is to be a man. With the sexualisation of men’s bodies in the media as a means of selling products. and a worrying growth in male eating disorders. Typical

Men is timely. It explores men's bodies from many angles: in states of undress, facing mortality, as religious iconography. even feminised. And of course the phallus as fertility symbol takes centre stage.

Whether it is the great Dutch choreographer Hans Van Manen's Caravaggio-inspired pieta with him holding a dead beautiful youth in his arms. or Jan Saudek's father lifting his son in his arms which went on to become a best—selling postcard. these photographs compel. Duane Michael's image of a modern Narcissus which graces the cover of the Glasgay brochure. only hints at the pleasures of this exhibition. (John Binnie)
