NEW WORK BRIGHT COLOURS ONLY

Tramway, Glasgow Thu 29 Nov-Sun 2 Dec

1n the past. the death of a loved one was a primarily domestic affair. The dead were laid out in front rooms: to chat to. to drink with. but ultimately to say goodbye to. Now it's like a flushable toilet: in the same way that we sanitise Otlr bodily functions. death is hidden in funeral parlours and crematoriums.

It's a lost tradition that performer Pauline Goldsmith believes we should return to. 'We don't have that earthy connection with our own mortality} she says. ‘This show is part of the struggle to retrieve it.‘ It's a solo perfori'riance. but Goldsmith has also co!laborz.ited with visual artist Mandy McCintosh to produce digital animation that will be juxtaposed with projected images of real homes from Goldsmiths native Belfast.

‘It looks at the ideal goodbye fantasy and the realistic compromise of the

Pauline Goldsmith: Burning (and burying) issues

packaged. conveyor belt funeral'. says Goldsmith. 'lt's a collage of different emotional responses to death that strives to

conquer fear through awareness. But basically it's a wake ‘.'/1111 tea and sandwiches. and maybe something a little stronger.’ The title comes from a recent obituary of the Scottish Rugby Iiitei'nationalist Gordon Brown whose family requested that

mourners were no black. but bright colours only. So if you've never been to an Irish wake ‘.'/ith a difference. don't say you've

not been inVited. (Davie Archibald)
