SYMPOSIUM STRANGE BEHAVIOUR

Tron Theatre, Sun 9 Dec.

Glasgow life

Zinnie Harris makes theatre add up

Ever wondered about the connection between theatre and the world of numbers? Scotland’s innovative theatre company Suspect Culture admits to being ‘nosy about other subjects’ and it was while a few of them were sitting in a pub, they started wondering about the connection between theatre and mathematics. Hence the symposium. ‘There’s lots of conferences about funding and cultural policy but not about creative subjects,’ says the blurb.

Partly inspired by Simon Singh, responsible for making science popular in the book and accompanying TV series, Fermat’s Last Theorem, in which be solved a centuries-old maths conundrum, the day at the Tron has gathered an amazing collection of individuals for talks and workshops. Performance artist Rose English will be in attendance as well as Finnish mathematician/ performance artist, Irma Optimist. From Canada comes playwright/scientist John Mighton, who recently adapted his play Possible Worlds for Robert Lepage to film. Graham Eatough and a professor from Heriot-Watt will be running a workshop exploring how you can theatrically communicate mathematical ideas. Award-winning dramatist Zinnie Harris (whose Further Than The Furthest Thing was such a success) will produce something on the day, after she has been paired with a statistician.

The session is open to all and lunch and refreshments are included in the

price. (John Binnie)
