You may well be aware that winter is drawing in, what with the pissing rain and gale force winds. Thankful/y a new night called Tiki island has begun to chase away those Winter blues offering us a hint of tropical paradise. Gillian McCormack employs the question and answer format beloved of this particular column to find out more. Tiki Island? Isn’t that in the middle of the South Pacific? It’s a bit of a way to go for a night out init? 80 near. yet so far. Yip. you're quite right. Tiki Island is somewhere between Hawaii and Easter Island. But luckily for us we don't need to jump on a plane to experience a Polynesian paradise. those nice people at Nice ‘n' Sleazy's have created one (or us .

Not that I’m taking the piss or anything, but Sauchiehall Street in the middle of winter doesn’t exactly conjure up images of volcanoes and conch shells. Well. that's where you're wrong. With a blend of Polynesian pop and lounge soonds playing all night long, not to mention the fantastic volcanic rum cocktails On offer. yOU can almost hear the anCIent drums echo in the distance.

Hold up a minute, have you been hammering the pills again? Polynesian pop? There’s no such thing. Wrong again. Polynesian pop was actually a bit of a cultural phenomenon in the US from the 50s until the early 70s. It offered its listeners an acceptable release from the rigid mores of the time. There is even a magazme the The Tiki News that lOCUSGS entirely on the Polynesian pop scene.

What? Did they have boy bands and shit? Not exactly. Martin Denny was probably the most viSIbIe icon of that period. With Les Baxter and Yma Sumac also notable purveyors of dreamy Hawaiian rhythms and exotic bird calls.

So why the big interest in it now? It's not a recent thing. young pup. Exotica and its parent genre ‘Iounge' have been resortacing for a few years now. gaining popularity along the way. I Tiki Island, week/y Tue at Nice 'n' Sleazy, Glasgow.
