UNDERGROUND HOUSE LUBE

Sun 9 Dec, Ego, Edinburgh.

Despite its recent shift from Wilkie House to the Honeycomb, it seems fair to call Taste an Edinburgh institution. So you’d think that if you were going to start a gay night in the capital, particularly one specialising in tough progressive house, you wouldn’t do it on a Sunday night, opposite Taste.

Lube has done just that.

The fortnightly party launched on Sun 11 Nov at Ego, and promoter Lisa Wright reckons there’s space enough for both nights. ‘I think there is a gap in the market,’ she says. ‘We’re certainly not in competition as such. We’re clubbers ourselves and partly because me and David (Tailor, the co- promoter) don’t DJ we can step back and look at things from a different

perspective’.

‘We’re trying to build the night around the people who go,’ agrees Tailor, ‘not just to create a product. We’ve been flyering specific nights like Joy and Luver and passing the word on to people we know so we get quite an

exclusive set-up. And at the first one everyone said what a good atmosphere

we had. That’s more important to us than making money.’ The people who will be spinning the records should be familiar to many Edinburgh clubbers. Scott Pearce and Dave Begg (Cerotonin), and Brian Dempster (Mingin’) will be marshalling the upstairs beats while Yogi Haughton plays the funky stuff down below. This fortnight, though, Haughton has the night off, because the Lube crew want to focus on their first guest, Kev Wright (no relation). Sublime resident Wright was recently lauded as the best trance DJ in Britain by no less luminaries than 808 State. And he’s looking forward to Lube. ‘I do Sublime all the time,’ he says, ‘so it can be quite good to get away from that and play a gay crowd, a different crowd who appreciate a different style. It’s a way of getting more people to hear what I do. I don’t compromise what I play, but I’m always listening for good sounds rather than certain styles, so what I play isn’t too tied to any genre.’ (James Smart)
