CHILDREN'S CONCERTS

RSNO SOUND STATION

Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow, Sat 1 Dec; Usher Hall, Edinburgh, Sun 2 Dec.

7!

There‘s a whiff of anarchy in the air. Today the Usher Hall and Royal Concert Hall are sedate halls of listening; ears are open, mouths are shut and burns are firmly planted on seats. But ten years from now. who knows? The classical music audience of tomorrow may well be a very different beast. From Children’s Classic Concerts to the RSNO Kids Proms to the all-new RSNO Sound StatiOn. youngsters across Scotland are being enc0uraged to clap their hands. stamp their feet. shout. sing and even play their own instruments where will it all lead?

'I hope that what we‘re doing is lighting a flame inside of children that continues to burn into the future.‘ says presenter Paul Rissman. ‘But it might well be that because they're all being introduced to classical music in a fun. light-hearted way. they'll expect that forever. Who knows what the concert of the future might become!‘ We await the results wrth interest. In the meantime. Rissman and the RSNO are stoking the flames of revolution with their re-packaged. re-vamped Sound Station series: Monster Music for the under 78. Kids Concerts for 7—12- year-olds and workshops for the whole family. First up (3 WWW (aka Wizards, Witches And Wands) in which Rissman will cast his usual spell over children and parents alike with his infectious enthusiasm. But finding a common ground for wee 7-year-olds. know-it-all 12-year-olds and accompanying adults isn‘t easy.

'I try to pitch it somewhere in the middle of that age range, and then have a mix of dialogue. jokes and activities for both the older and younger ones.‘ explains Rissman. “And I always feel that my role is to make the parents smile too. because if they don't have a good time they‘re not going to come back. But everybody has ears and everyone listens to the music and at the end of the day. that's what excites the children my job is not to get in the way too much.‘ (Kelly Apter)
