EVENT REVIEW

2001 SCOTTISH B-BOY CHAMPIONSHIPS Dancebase, Edinburgh, Sat 15 Dec eeee

/

‘About time’ was the general feeling surrounding this long awaited breakdancing event at the newly opened Dancebase HQ in the Grassmarket. Representatives of crews from Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle, London and Belfast turned out to showcase their skills and with limited space available to spectators, door staff were forced to close the doors only ten

minutes after they opened.

Apparently Allan Irvine, breakdancing instructor and organiser of the inaugural Scottish B-Boy Championships, had no idea that the event would be so oversubscribed. Given strong evidence of considerable local interest - Irvine’s classes at Dancebase regularly sell out and the capital’s hip hop clubs such as Scratch, Flippin and Da Break stimulate interest in breakdancing all year round - it was realised, sadly all too late, that a venue at least twice the size of the main Dancebase studio was needed to accommodate an event of

this kind.

Problems elsewhere included the soundsystem breaking down half an hour into the event, a fortuitous failing as a drafted in b-box contributed an authentic street vibe which ably set the scene for the breaking. The overall standard on the night was exceptionally high, with Bad Taste Crew from Omagh, Northern Ireland claiming the Best Crew title and Care Bear & Worm from the Sinstars crew seizing the coveted TWO On Two title.

Looking towards next year, Irvine would like to expand the event into an all day affair involving the whole scene connected to breaking from the music and the art to the fashion and the people. Priorities will no doubt include a fully functional sound system and a venue of adequate size to do justice to this long-standing physical art of urban expression. (Zee Yule)
