Clubs ll‘.lll it in

Launching a brand new nightclub in January is widely considered to be something of a no-no, with punters impecunious after the festive free for all, but Nurture’s first outing was a sure-fire success. Jack Mottram finds out why, with the help of his intellectually challenged imaginary friend.

Nurture, that sounds rather pleasant and womb-like. Are we talking soothing ambient and abstract beats? No. thank the Lord. we are not. Nurture is the latest venture from Dan Lurinsky and Jamie & John Mac. known for their devotion to the harder end of the techno spectrum, as evinced by the thumping sounds trotted out at Lurinsky's regular club Monox. and the equally up-front selections familiar to fans of Jamie & John's peripatetic venture Basic Level. Neato. I love hard-as-nails music. Don't we all. but Nurture is the 30und of three DJs casting off the shackles of genre to delve deep into their crates for favourite tracks from the last couple of decades. feeling free to play anything they fancy and taking the crowd on a magical mystery tour of the electronic music that informs the sound of their less eclectic regular slots.

So it’s a history lesson? Not exactly. Bang up to date releases are liable to find their way into the mix. along with pretty much every sub-genre of electronica you care to mention. whether it's classic electro. Detroit techno. Chicago house. Miami bass or squelchy acid cuts. Closed—minded techno fetishists are unlikely to be impressed. which means there should be room on the dancefloor for right- thinking folk up for a bit of sonic exploration.

Sounds cool. Clubs often book guests, i hear: will this lot be importing any talent? Indeed they will, once the dust has settled. Max Duley is set to make the trip up north. He's a London-based producer and DJ who's racked up a slew of quality releases on labels such as Kne'Deep and Hi Octane. as well as his own ARCart imprint. Appropriately enough. he's known for side-stepping techno loop cliches. mixing anything he considers a Quality track. DMX Crew are also on the Nurture Wish-list. and the idea is to provide a Wide variety of guests to match the residents' free- wheeling tastes.

l’m sold. See you there.

I Nurture runs every second Fri at Club 69, Paisley. The next date is Fri 8 Feb.
