HOUSE PUBLIC SPIRIT Budda, Glasgow, weekly Fridays

Jon Da Silva‘s first professional gig came at an opportune moment in the history of British dance music: in the box at the Hacienda in 1998. Since then he's been working the crowd with all the strands of underground house. from vocal-led garage cuts to the deepest of

dancefloor chuggers.

Da Silva‘s latest venture. in partnership with shadowy DJ duo the Adorphiliacs. is Public Spirit, a weekly foray into the world of dub. in all its incarnations. ‘lt‘s about ' Da Silva says. ‘Although it's not that extreme. we are making a genuine attempt to break away from the usual fodder. We're starting off the night with dub reggae. which hasn't been played in clubs for quite a while now. Then the idea is to take it from dub reggae to dub disco some of the more extreme stuff and we're just going for a mish mash of tempo and time to try and get a good atmosphere going, with a little bit of art terrorism thrown in at some

breaking the mould a little bit musically.

points for good measure.‘

Although Public Spirit is set to be residents-led. the occasional guest may grace the decks thanks to the club's affiliated label. ‘We've got some people coming in

as special guests. the occasional oddity. but they won't necessarily be announced.‘ says Da Silva. “The label is starting up at the moment Pleasure Industries. which is linked to Pleasure Records in Manchester so I'm in the studio here in Glasgow working on some stuff. and Rob Bright from Bugged Out is going to be coming up to join me. It's going to be strictly 7in only. and. hopefully. one release a month. Wlill a band on the A-side. and our cut-up madness on the B.‘ If launching a weekly residency and affiliated label sound like grand plans. Da Silva doesn't appear to he (lauiitetl. Once the Friday night is up and running, we're aiming to do more live stuff. and events in bigger venues.‘ he says. “That's what's

planned for the future.‘ (Jack Mottram)
