HEMP TRADING COMPANY

‘I very rarely wear anything other than hemp,’ says Gav Lawson, commercial director of the Hemp Trading Company. ‘Once you’ve washed it a few times it feels as natural as your own skin. Linen tends to go harder the more you wash it, hemp softens up and holds its shape.’

Working on a 55% hemp to 45% cotton ratio due to cost limitations, Lawson hopes to up the hemp content: ‘We are trying to get more hemp planted and thus get less cotton planted. It’s a plant that can replace all petroleum- based products, that can replace paper and wood pulp, stop deforestation and reverse the greenhouse effect.’

Gav Lawson’s and his bother Dru’s unique line in urban streetwear, cross-branding with the underground hip hop and drum & bass movement can only give hemp a good name. It started when Dru was arrested for carrying cannabis to France. ‘He had this cap on, he looked at the label which read “100% organic hemp” and he thought: “Hang on, I’ve been locked up for something you can do some good with.” So when he got out he looked into hemp and started a business in Hull called Hempology.’

Gav joined him a couple of years later and they’re now into into their second range of clothing. These boys have learnt the hard way, but with the outspoken support of Mark Thomas, Howard Marks and half the UK hip hop underground, things are going fine. Lawson hopes that up and coming bands such as the Heavies, Taskforce and MC’s GO, Redeye and Trip will become fashion mascots for the label.

The trousers, shirts and screen printed T-shirts are designed by Nadia Lala (formerly of the Free Tibet label) and are available in Scotland only at Pie In The Sky on Cockburn Street, Edinburgh, but THTC is looking for accounts and agents in Scotland. (Paul Dale)
