TECHNO GLASNOST Alaska, Glasgow, Fri 17 May

he Bpitch is in Control: Ellen Allien

Not content with running Scotland's first internet based radio station. Radio Magnetic is branching out into club promotion. Launching last month. Glasnost has an agenda as anti-commercial is its radio counterpart. aiming. as it does. to bring a bit of SOphisticated techno to the city.

While its tag line of ‘east meets west' might have the ring of Rocky IV to it. the idea is considerably less ridiculous than the script for a Stallone movie. “We wanted to introduce something different to the Glasgow club scene. bringing through unknown. yet respected. names from aCross Europe.‘ says Radio Magnetics Tom Lousada. ‘One of our DJs. Robin Murray. came back from playing the Balkans enthusing about the talent he had seen. With Glasnost the music policy will be as diverse as our guests ranging from German electro to Croatian house moving into French hip hop. Glasnost aims to do something different and add rather than compete with the vibrant Glasgow clubbing scene.‘

This month's instalment features the UK debut of Berlin based techno label Bpitch Control's front-woman. Ellen Allien. A brief resume of Allien's achievements includes hosting 60 hours of broadcasting from Berlin's Love Parade on the city's Kiss FM. having over 30 releases in her own name and launching the Bpitch Control label. itself nearing a half-century of releases in under three years of operation. Impressive. I'm sure you'll agree.

And her vision for the label is no less impressive. ‘Bpitch Control considers itself as a channel where the collective is the priority and the ideas of every individual have their space.‘ she says. ‘The reflection about the sound can become the mirror of the city of Berlin. Acoustically Bpitch Control romps about on the wide

field of electronic music.‘

Joining Allien are Glasnost residents Robin Murray. Matthew Bennet (Kinky Afro) and Dougal Perman co-owner of Radio Magnetic. alongside Mr Todd and Gav Sutherland from Underground Solu'shn. And you can catch it live on wwwradiomagneticcom just like all Glasnost club nights. (Stewart Dalley)
