TRANCE

OLIVER LIEB

Sublime at the Honeycomb, Edinburgh, Fri 10 May

It shouldn't. perhaps. be too much of a Surprise that a club so renowned for musical mayhem should be a little uncertain about specifics. ‘Oliver‘s played five or six times.‘ insists promoter Scott Conchar. Oliver himself is less certain. ‘I've been four times.‘ he says. 'I guess it could be five . . .' Whatever the case. Lieb IS glad to be back and Sublime are delighted to have him.

The Frankfurt-based producer and DJ used to play bass in a funk band. and first began working on dance tracks in 1989. Since then he's gone from techno through house and drum & bass to ambient and back again. with his set at 98‘s Love Parade and last year's FOrce Legato album System bringing his underground sound to a wider audience. Oakenfold is a big fan. and Lieb has undertaken mixing duties for the likes of Snap. Sven Valli and Yello.

But whatever you do. don't ask him to take on a song he loves. 'I actually prefer to mix an OK track.’ he says. ‘With the really good tracks I know that whatever I do I'm gonna think: "Ooh. fuck. it's not as good as the original." but with an OK track you can find something interesting in it and work with that.‘

Lieb has released his own music through a bewildering range of projects. including Spicelab (‘rough and experimental). Ambush (‘ethno-Percussive) and L.S.G (‘flying and drifting techno-trance). but his sound has often been characterised by his affection for analogue Synthesisers. ‘Actually.’ he explains. “right now I'm not using them so much. I used to use older equipment because each piece had a unique sound and they felt really warm and fat. whereas all the early digital synths sounded the same. but now the digitals are at least as good. and a lot easier to handle.‘ (James Smart)
