SUPERNATURAL DRAMA DRAGO (12) 103min o

Dragonfly: avoid like your life depended on it.

Spare a thought for poor old Kevin Costner. He must have looked at Bruce Willis' success with The Sixth Sense and thought 'that's what I need to do: a supernatural drama! With children! And we'll throw in a parrot!‘ Sadly. however. Dragonfly is embarrassingly bad in every possible way and you don't need a sixth sense to tell you that Mr. Costner is now badly in need of a hit.

Costner plays hospital doctor Joe Darrow. whose wife has recently died while on a mercy mission in the mountains of Venezuela. However. the body has not been recovered and Darrow finds himself unable to grieve. Eventually. on the verge of a breakdown, he starts to think that she is trying to communicate something to him via people who have had near-death experiences. This involves strange drawings and dragonflies. It's really just an excuse to parade a bunch of cute. sick children around in the hope of evoking memories of that other movie

where children see dead people.

Eventually Darrow travels to the jungle for a truly ridiculous finale that is mind- boggling in its stupidity. all the more so because it's clear that the film-makers intended it to be a deeply moving moment. Overall, the film is borineg predictable. desperately slow and full of appalling lines like 'this isn't heaven this is rainbows.‘ Even the presence of Kathy Bates as Costner's friendly lesbian

neighbour fails to inject any life into it.

SCI-Fl ADVENTURE IMPOSTER (15) 86min 0.

The year is 2079 and Earth is waging a losing battle with the Centurians. highly advanced aliens. Spence Olham (baggy eyed Gary Sinisel is a much lauded governmental scientist. On his way into work one day he gets nabbed by the secret police led by Hathaway (hammy old Vincent D'Onofrio) and accused of being an alien impostor. He escapes and is determined to clear his name wrth the help of his beautiful doctor wife (Madeline Stowe).

Sound familiar? It should do: this is The Fugitive courtesy of Philip K Dick. the man who wrote the stories upon which Total Recall and Blade Runner

were based. This. unfortunately. is not in the same league. A visually reSplendent first ten minutes lead into a formulaic chase movie. despite all the best efforts of those involved. Except. that is. the screenwriter Scott Rosenberg. Yes. the man who wrote one of the duirkiest gangster films of the mid-90s. Things to Do in Denver When you're Dead. needs to stand up and admit that sci-fi just ain't his bag. man. This has lines that even Schwarzenegger in his decrepitude w0uld baqu at.

lmposfer still manages to rattle along quite pleasantly though and may just be worth a peek for Dick enthusiasts loo-er missus) when it is released on Video. (Paul Dale‘i I General release from Fri 74 Jun.
