HOUSE DJ HEATHER

Subculture at MAS, Glasgow, Sat 22 Jun

Things are blowmg tip for DJ Heather. Emerging as one of the true stars of the Chicago scene. she shocked many of the more honest media men by her ascendance. a may looking lady playing out some of the toughest tribal house

andtechnozuound.

Her last Scottish appearance stands out. cutting a striking figure hunched over the decks aboard the Renfrew Ferry. She wouldn't rest until every last ounce of power had been squeezed out of those steel wheels. giving the crowd the battering they craved. On leainng the stage. she was implored to return by one bare-chested reveller with: 'Aww Macy Gray. get back oot here!‘ Another mad

night for Subculture.

Since then the word has spread like wildfire and the plaudits have piled tip from all the finest sources. A number of DJs. such as Derrick Carter. rate her among the best on the global circuit. And her appearance in only the finest style mags in

recent months is an indication that wider acceptance is JtlSl around the corner for

a DJ who cherishes the underground mentality. Like all spinners or producers worth writing about. the tides of fashion hold no power over Heather. ‘Many things influence me. more than just one SOtind.' she says. ‘If its quality music and I enjoy it. I'll play that record. You have to bring a little bit of everything to wnat y0u do and that makes for a broader experience.‘

Her ideas on how to craft a set suggest not only a fierce passion about what she does. but also an intellect underlying her work. She is evangelical about her music. considering herself an 'edutainer'. and her aim is to incorporate the music she loves and enjoys. ‘lt's to make a reflection of yourself out of this art form," she says. ‘It's an exten8ion of you and yOu have to take it very seriously. And at the same time you take it all wath a grain of salt. It is itist playing records and it all really comes down to the party.‘ (Johnny Regan)
