BOB DOOLALLY’S WORLD CUP SPECIAL

The Stand, Edinburgh, Wed 19 Jun 0...

When you consider how many tools you have to suffer to watch a game of football (stand up Paul Gascoigne). it's a wonder that so few comedians touch on the great game. Maybe it's because they were the jokers rather than the sports jocks at school. Or maybe it's because they've just seen Bob Doolally and felt the threat of comparison.

Doolally is comic Paul Sneddon's creation. and the bleary-eyed ex- player has more than a little in common with The Fast Snow's addled 13th Duke of Wybourne. The truths he voices are often so obvious it's difficult to know just how ironic he's being. but it's the delivery that makes the man:

The hand 0 Bo

his thick drawl often disintegrating into mumbled gobbledegook as he quaffs water from a two-litre vodka bottle. It's one of his key weapons. alongside a spot-on Kevin Keegan impression and some fine drunken reminiscences (‘Have you ever woken up with a lung pierced and blamed it on fruit?)

His ramblings take in the obvioos targets of Berti. Sven. Souness. Maradonna. Hugh Dallas and David Beckham as well as veering past Cowdenbeath and Tynecastle. The question and answer session that ends this show of three halves ends up being the weakest section. overlong and a little directionless. btit it does allow Doolally to unleash his catchphrases (everyone who was anyone is a ‘close personal friend') and demonstrate his gift for ad-libbing and crowd control. He can tee' like a one-trick pony. but if you like beer and love football Doolally will set

you snorting into your pint. (James Smart)
