COMPILATION ROUND-UP

The relationship between books and their covers has long been a disputed one, but you have to say the new School Disco album reveals a pretty close correlation. Summer Holiday (Sony .0 ) is fronted by a girl in school uniform, hinting at a mix of nostalgia, sex, exploitation and trash that the album is quick to deliver on - track one is ‘Club Tropicana’. It falls down on the fact that while many of these songs (you know the ones) do indeed sound

To say the man wears his influence on his hiiious sleeves ‘.'.rou|d be something of an iinrlerstatement. Lam; Blackmon. Rick James. Outkast. Prince and Guru constantly lurk backstage here. Cee-lo is however very much his own man and in complete control of this superth produced slice of plastic. He can ‘oe funny ‘Closet Freak'. funky ‘El Dorado Sunrise or deeply humane ~ ‘Young Man'. totally horrible in the cold light of day.

Equally tacky but slightly better is Cream Beach 2002 (Cream 0.0 ), whose liner notes recommend buying albums in airports and describe Royksopp as ‘shamelessly undergound’. Is that possible? It features the usual range of trance, pop and house from bilge (Lasgo) to brilliant (Green Velvet). Those looking for something a little less mainstream might consider checking out Global Warming/Global Cooling (Nation

), a compilation made by the kind of people who think that

two potbellied ten-pin bowling aliens would make good cover art and that Spaghetti Junction was built by aliens. The Fun>Da>Mental tracks are fun,

though.

No such larks from progressive Yank Erick Morillo, who bangs out a funked up three disc selection that alternates between full-on vocal house and exciting techy rumblings on Subliminal Sessions Three (Subliminal

). There‘s nowt but a popped champagne cork on the front of The

Way it Was (Gut Records 0000 ), a highly entertaining collection of UK garage (with a heavy house influence) from 93 to 9-6 that features the likes of the Dreem Team and Mid Xpress. You only hope that, with UK Garage

taking darker turns, the party isn’t over yet.

Cover of the month has to go to Salon Oriental (Inca O.

), a mix of

rather forgettable world music, dance and weird tappy noises whose frontspiece guns for the North African lounge vibe but ends up looking like the set of a middle-class porn movie. Worse images (bald man, glasses) but better tunes come from Canadian techno old timer John Acquaviva, whose From Saturday to Sunday (Clubstar O... ) sizzles with good sounds and subtlety. But best of the lot is Stand By (NTT O... ), a smoothly packaged collection of deep, rolling house and joyful breakbeats from lots of people I’ve never heard of but you might have (Lorenzo, Ciudad Feliz) that manages to be old school, new school and very good indeed.
