l-ESl'IVAL FIELDTRIP

Talnotry, Galloway Forest Park, Dumfries & Galloway, 16-18 Aug

Call Luke Vibert's house when he's not in and you get the sound of a baby giggling on his answerphone. This tells you several things. Firstly; it tells you that yo. have indeed got the right number for the UK's cheekiest and most astute of samplers and secondly that Mr Vibert is indeed the proud father of a baby. But then he's always known that a sound can say more than a thousand pictures. On last years Mus/pal there was the disturbing confessions of a borstal boy: sped up and trimmed. over a den-e ously' Suininery' electro track. That's Just the latest example however.

Converted ffOll‘ .iidie by' De La Soul's Three Feet High and R/Slllg. Vibert has helped define the UK's twisted appropriation of the hip hop mentality. In that time he has developed his own philosophy. ‘I sample old shit fr()ll‘ records that I don't care about easy listening stuff. I hardly ever sample records that I like because then I feel guilty. You can get really nice (fftlfl‘ beats off terrible rock records.'
