Gay cinema is back on track this month with everything from diva documentaries to queer cinema classes. The main hub of this film frenzy is the GFT in Glasgow it’s no wonder they won the Pride Award for

contribution to culture.

One of the GFT’s films (also playing at the capital’s Filmhouse and part of the Edinburgh International Film Festival) is Marlene Dietrich: Her Own Song, a documentary made by her grandson, J David Riva. He focuses on her time during the war using unseen footage and interviews to gain a better insight into the life of this diva. Dietrich was well known for her gay relationships and her ability to cross genders with ease, making her one of the world's biggest gay icons. The film’s producer, Hans Pausch, will also be

appearing at the screening.

Talk to Her, on the other hand, is definitely not a gay film but directed by a well known gay filmmaker: Spain’s Pedro Almodovar. The film looks at the different way that men deal with their love of women by focusing on two relationships. Benigno cares for Alicia who is in a coma and finds himself falling in love with her while Marco’s love for bullfighter Lydia is tested after a fighting accident which leaves her in a coma also. Almodovar manages to create a moving piece of film tackling the weighty issues of love, loneliness and friendship. If his last masterpiece All About my Mother can be lived up

to, Talk to Her is a must see.

If you want to know more about queer cinema you can check out the GFT’s queer cinema nights, run by The List’s very own John Binnie, every Tuesday night in September. The first film featured is the Swedish Show Me Love, an absolutely delightful coming-out story about a tomboy girl secretly realising she’s in love with the most popular girl in school. Director Lukas Moodysson won great success with his follow up Together, but for lesbians everywhere Show Me Love is the one. (Jane Hamilton)
