AERODYNAMICO EUROPEAN DJ EXCHANGE

Various venues, Glasgow, Fri 6-Mon 9 Sep (also Porto, Portugal, Oct)

PH5.5 looks forward to his free holiday

Most people would gnaw their right arm off for a free holiday, but as we all know there is no such thing as a free vacation (or something like that). Aerodynamico, however, is trying its best to put that truism to bed with the launch of its European DJ exchange programme. Stumbling across Portuguese DJ Claudio Rebohlo through the internet not in the sex pest way you understand but through a mutual love of nu jazz - Aerodynamico resident pH5.5 hit on the idea of sharing their respective record collections at the other’s residency in an attempt to, as he says, ‘promote music in different countries. And to get a free holiday’. The first part of the exchange takes place in front of Aerodynamico’s home crowd at Ad-Lib (Fri 6 Sep), Bar 91 (Sat 7 Sep), Optimo (at MAS, Sun 8 Sep, tbc) and www.radiomagnetic.com (live broadcast, Mon 9 Sep) where pH5.5 is joined by Porto resident, Rebohlo. Starting out as a DJ at the tender age of 15, Rebohlo promises a level of audio excitement for the Glasgow Aerodynamico crowd that will be anyone’s guess. His residency at Quintas Alternatives (Alternative Thursdays) has an ever-changing musical policy: one week drum & bass, the next electronica, then deep

house . . . you get the picture.

Whatever the musical soundscape, Rebohlo will make sure it’ll be a belter of a night. I mean, you’d be in a bloody fantastic mood if someone paid you to play records in another country, right? Part two of the programme features pH5.5 trading in the rain soaked October streets of Glasgow for the sunnier climes of Portugal (Bar 31, Portuguese Suave and Café na Praca) where he’ll play out his collection of hip hop, funk, soul, R&B, ska, reggae, 605 rock’n’roll and electro on the self-same decks that past guests Gilles Peterson, Koop, James Lavelle and Laurent Gariner have given a seeing to.

Never one to rest on his Iaurels, pH5.5 has also disclosed that an EP is ready and waiting in the wings, with a compilation album due out before the end of the year. No wonder the guy needs a holiday. (Stewart Dalley)
