MISCHIEF FIRST BIRTHDAY

The Venue, Edinburgh, Fri 11 Oct

listings Clubs

MC Skibadee, king of MCing?

Most student-run nights are lucky if they last for a few months: enthusiasm isn’t a substitute for experience. But drum & bass/hip hop night Mischief has been a huge success. It was set up in October 2001, by ‘born and bred junglist’ Josh Freedman Berthoud and pirate radio veteran Isaac Moshe and since then has enjoyed numerous full houses and brought the likes of Mickey Finn, Aphrodite, Jumpin’ Jack Frost, Shy

FX and Prime Cuts to Edinburgh.

Moshe says he always knew there was a hole in the market. ‘lt’s a big city, a capital city,’ he says, ‘but Edinburgh doesn’t really have the same kind of scene that London or even somewhere like Bristol has. You’ve got quality nights, and there’s no trouble and a good vibe. But we were seeing the same people at something like Scratch that we were seeing at a drum & bass night, so we thought we had a chance of combining two nights and filling that hole with something big.’

The new year is likely to herald changes in Mischief’s set up, but this month’s birthday bash should be enough to get both drum & bass and hip hop fans salivating. Rodney P, DJ Skitz, Nicky Blackmarket and Randall are joined by MC Skibadee, Shy FX’s latest collaborator. And while he may have been rated best MC by Knowledge magazine for the last two years, Skibadee isn’t about to start resting on any laurels. ‘Drum & bass has been around for almost ten years and if it’s going to get bigger it’s gonna have to appeal to other markets a lot of it is too hard for your average ear,’ he says. ‘l’ve been rated the number one MC for the last two or three years, but I don’t feel that’s the highlight of my career, I mean it’s all good, but I think: “What can I do next?”’
