BOOKS

JACKIE KAY/PETER BURTON

Jackie Kay, Gallery of Modern Art, Royal Exchange Square, Fri 1 Nov, 6.30pm; Bend Sinister: The Gay Times Book of Disturbing Stories, ed Peter Burton (GMP) £9.99

Glasgow’s First Night’s Festival brings you the chance to hear lesbian writer Jackie Kay read from her own work. Anyone who has read her Adoption Papers or short story collection Why Don’t you Stop Talking will hurry along to hear this articulate woman. Previously resident in Glasgow, she now lives in Manchester with her son and lover, the poet Carol Ann Duffy. Kay’s first novel Trumpet, about a black Glasgow jazz trumpeter born a woman but who lived as a man, rates as

Jackie Kay: live reading

one of the best Scottish books of all time.

There are Scottish writers aplenty in Bend Sinister, a new volume of disturbing short stories brought together by the literary editor of Gay fimes, Peter Burton. Jack Dickson (see Sucker Punch article) writes menacingly and sexily about a dangerous overnight encounter between an Arab and a

Scot delayed in 3 Morocco airport.

The Glaswegian Joe Mills, who has edited a mainstream collection of Scottish lesbian and gay writing himself, contributes a comic revenge story about three wayward ghosts haunting the folk who pissed them off on earth.

There are also examples of short work by Scots novelist/reviewer Graeme Woolaston, playwright Michael Wilcox, artistic director of the Lyric Hammersmith, Neil Bartlett, and a great gay novelist Francis King.

It’s a lively, eclectic collection with many of the stories leaving you wary, scared or with a feeling of other worldliness. This sense of being different, of not fitting in, of being a camera recording the outside world which is such a part of the gay sensibility is a recurring theme of many of these short stories. Gay men, because they have previously been outcasts, understand the nature of ‘otherness’ so much more.

Highly recommended. And it you don’t like one writer’s style or are getting too scared, you can move quickly on to another because the

stories are short. (John Binnie)
